The Spanish Partridge

Considered by many people to be the world’s most challenging and fast game bird

The Partridges

The main secret to why our partridges are so good is because they have been bred and reared IN SPAIN. The warm and dry climate there is ideal for rearing game birds. They grow faster and as a result they are more forward for their age when they arrive here in the UK and therefore, hugely importantly, are less susceptible to disease.

Furthermore the breeding operation is extremely strict. Wild stock from Jerez (the last stronghold of the wild Iberian partridge) is constantly being reintroduced to the gene pool and guarantees that no bird we sell is ever less than second generation wild. On average they are 50g lighter than a French partridge but have the same wingspan making them a more agile target.

A combination of the genetics and the climate in which our birds are reared result in a stronger bird that not only flies better than a French partridge, but the wild, territorial instincts they have mean they hold exceptionally well too thus ensuring higher percentage returns on birds released. Getting up in small coveys from the back of cover strips in small coveys and bursting all over the line gives more guns more constant shooting. This is a very different story to French partridges that often get up in large groups and mainly go over three or four guns in the middle of the line.

To summarise, our Spanish partridges are described by guns, estate owners and gamekeepers all over the country as simply the next level in partridge shooting:

  • Bred in Spain
  • Reared in Spain
  • Less susceptible to disease
  • Higher percentage returns
  • Territorial and holding instincts of a wild partridge
  • A far better flying bird
